Day 14: The Faithfulness of God
Faithfulness is an attribute of God that we would be hopeless without. In Hebrew, the word for “faithfulness” means firmness, steadfastness, fidelity, and steadiness. God is steadfast, unmoving, and secure. He can be relied on. He is the same yesterday, today, and forever; He does not change (Hebrews 13:8; Malachi 3:6). This means His Word is true, His promises are sure, and His people can rest knowing He is who He says He is.
God’s faithfulness is also primarily about Him. It’s about His identity, His gospel, and how He enacts His sovereign will on earth as in heaven. It reveals, confirms, and displays His glory for all creation to behold.
Yet because He is overtly gracious, He allows us to benefit from His faithfulness as well. He reveals it to us, extends it to us, covers us with it, and exercises it as a constant reality in our lives through the gospel of His Son, Jesus Christ. To be sure, it is only because of Jesus that we have access to both knowledge of and experience with God’s faithfulness. We are abject failures; He is absolutely faithful. And because of Jesus, He is faithful to us.
He is faithful to forgive us (1 John 1:9), is faithful in His lovingkindness towards us (Lamentations 3:22), faithful in His justice (Deuteronomy 32:4), faithful to hear our prayers (Psalm 143:1), and faithful in His plans (Isaiah 25:1). We do not merit His faithfulness, nor receive it reciprocally. But because of Jesus, we benefit from His faithfulness and are commissioned to be ambassadors of it in this world.
“The faithfulness of God is a datum of sound theology but to the believer it becomes far more than that: it passes through the processes of the understanding and goes on to become nourishing food for the soul.” – A.W. Tozer
Prayer:
It is a good thing to give thanks unto Thee and to sing praises unto Thy name, O Most High, to show forth Thy loving-kindness in the morning and Thy faithfulness every night. As Thy Son while on earth was loyal to Thee, His Heavenly Father, so now in heaven He is faithful to us, His earthly brethren; and in this knowledge we press on with every confident hope for all the years and centuries yet to come. Amen. – A.W. Tozer
Response:
How does meditating upon God’s faithfulness inspire and embolden your faithfulness to Him?
Where have you failed in your faithfulness? Spend some time repenting and asking the Lord to reveal His strength through your weaknesses moving forward.
