Day 7: God’s Infinitude

The advancements of our world have led us to believe we are capable of far more than we actually are. Much like the builders of Babel, the more we achieve, the more blind we become to the reality of our Creator. We exchange God’s infinitude for our ineptitude, and are delusional enough to believe it’s a check we can cash.

We desperately need a wakeup call, and the ringtone God has chosen to stir us with is His infinitude.

God is limitless. His infinitude is, in fact, the first attribute hinted at in Scripture –  “In the beginning, GOD…”  God was before the beginning, orchestrated the beginning, and has authored the unfolding of His story throughout His creation ever since. He is the Alpha and Omega (Revelation 1:8), eternity is His habitation (Isaiah 57:15), and He far surpasses our ability to comprehend Him (Isaiah 55:8-9).

Yet with an ironic wink via the pages of Scripture, the unsearchable One expresses His desire for us to search for Him, to know Him, and to love Him in return. He yearns for His finite ones to explore His infiniteness, for it is only when we do (guided by Scripture) that we behold Him for who He really is.

Unlike the builders of Babel who sought to displace God with themselves, the Spirit-led and contrite of heart seek to displace themselves with God. They crave the reality of His eternality more than the decay of the sin-laden temporary. They realize their capabilities are but a mirage, keeping us chasing after achievements that never satisfy instead of seeking the One who does. As Tozer noted: “How completely satisfying to turn from our limitations to a God who has none.” May we increasingly realize that our satisfaction is found in the sufficiency of His infinitude as we forsake our feeble grip on the delusion of our own.

Prayer:

Our Heavenly Father: Let us see Thy glory, if it must be from the shelter of the cleft rock and from beneath the protection of Thy covering hand. Whatever the cost to us in loss of friends or goods or length of days let us know Thee as Thou art, that we may adore Thee as we should. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.  – A.W. Tozer
